What is EN/IEC 61000-6-3?

EN/IEC 61000-6-3, also known as Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standard, specifies the emission requirements applicable to multimedia equipment and information technology equipment. This technical standard ensures that devices comply with the electromagnetic compatibility regulations, limiting their emission of electromagnetic disturbances as well as improving their immunity to external interference.

Emission Limits for Multimedia Equipment

EN/IEC 61000-6-3 sets specific emission limits for multimedia equipment designed for home or office use. These limits define the maximum level of electromagnetic interference that a device can produce without causing issues to other nearby devices or systems. The standard covers a range of electronic appliances such as computers, laptops, printers, televisions, radios, and digital cameras, among others.

Improved Immunity for Information Technology Equipment

In addition to emission requirements, EN/IEC 61000-6-3 also addresses the issue of susceptibility of information technology equipment to electromagnetic disturbances. This means that the standard details the measures and criteria that equipment should fulfill in order to be less sensitive to external electromagnetic fields. By complying with these specifications, devices become more immune to disturbances caused by other electronic equipment or even environmental factors such as lightning or power surges.

Ensuring Compatibility and Coexistence

The primary objective of EN/IEC 61000-6-3 is to ensure the compatibility and coexistence of different electronic devices within a shared environment. By implementing common standards and regulations, the standard minimizes the possibility of equipment interfering with each other when used simultaneously. This is particularly crucial in modern homes and workplaces where numerous electronic devices are in use, relying on various types of wireless communications, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
